Chains of cause and effect

Get the students to consider and discuss the causes of, for example, children growing up in an orphanage, on the streets or in an institution.

1. Explain in brief that some children cannot live with their parents, using factual texts and reports in The Globe as a starting point.

2. Write “children who cannot grow up with their family” on the board or on a large sheet of paper.

3. Ask the students to suggest reasons why some children end up living on the streets or in an institution. They might say “abuse”, “they are orphans” or “war”. Write down all the suggestions.

4. Once you have enough suggestions you can collectively begin drawing lines and arrows between them, to see the chains of cause and effect. The students may identify that some things should be removed, while others are missing, such as some of the most important causes of children being separated from their families: poverty and lack of respect for the rights of the child.

5. Conclude with collective reflection and give some positive examples from The Globe, where children have received support and been helped in attaining a dignified life, in order to show that there is hope.
