The goal of the World’s Children’s Prize programme is a more humane world, where the rights of the child are respected by all. Students at schools that have registered as Global Friend schools are welcome to participate. There are now 57,450 Global Friend schools, with 27 million students in 102 countries.
Every year the children decide, through a Global Vote, who should receive the World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child. The record number of voting children is 7.1 million! Before the prize is awarded, several million children have learned about the rights of the child and democracy in the following stages:
• World’s Children’s Press Conferences
The World’s Children’s Prize programme begins with World’s Children’s Press Conferences, where children announce the three prize candidates, as selected by the International Child Jury, and ask their local politicians questions on the rights of the child.
• The rights of the child – in your life and in the world
First you learn about the child rights situation in your home country. Are the rights of the child respected in your and your friends’ lives? Discuss how things should be, and prepare presentations for parents, teachers, politicians and the media.
Next, using the Globe, the World’s Children’s Prize Magazine, you learn about the international jury children, about how the world’s children are doing, and about the prize candidates and the children they fight for.
• Prepare your Global Vote
Learn about children all over the world who take part in the Global Vote in the the Globe, the World’s Children’s Prize Magazine. Then set a date for your own Global Vote Day and prepare everything you’ll need for a democratic election. Invite the media, your parents, and politicians to experience the day with you.
• Global Vote Day
Celebrate with a party! Don't forget to report your school’s voting results in the online ballot box or to the coordinator in your country.
• World’s Children’s Press Conferences
On the same day, all over the world, it is time to reveal who has been voted prize laureate. Invite all media representatives to a press conference in your area on that day. Take the chance to talk about the improvements you'd like to see in terms of children's rights.
• The Award Ceremony
The World’s Children’s Prize programme ends with the Award Ceremony at Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred. All three prize candidates receive prize money to use for their work for children. The jury children lead the ceremony, and Queen Silvia of Sweden helps to present the prizes.
The Global Vote
The Global Vote is the climax of the WCP program, engaging children around the world.
