Maria Elena worked as an unpaid maid

Maria Elena Morales Achahui, (center) left her poor village in the Peruvian mountains when she was twelve years old. To survive she became an unpaid maid for her aunt in the city of Cusco. Maria Elena had to work so much that she couldn’t go to school. When she complained, her aunt threatened to beat her. When she finally stood up for herself her aunt threw her out into the street. Thankfully, Maria Elena managed to find help. Today she lives at a girls’ home in Cusco. She goes to school and fights for the rights of maids. On the Children’s Jury Maria Elena represents girls who work as maids, often under slave-like conditions, and fights for their rights. In the photo Maria Elena sits with jurymembers Nuzhat Tabassum from Bangladesh and Poonam Thapa from Nepal. Learn more about them and their Jury friends on our website!
