Maggy Barankitse from Burundi has fought for decades to help children live a better life in war-torn Burundi, where armed conflict and poverty lead to many violations of children’s rights.

Maggy has helped more than 10,000 children to a better life, and built villages where orphaned children can grow up in ‘families’. They receive food, clothing, medical care, schooling, homes and love! Maggy helps children from all groups and faiths of Burundi, telling them that they are all equal. She also helps poor children in neighbouring villages, and shows that people in Burundi can support one another. Maggy received The World's Childrens Prize in 2003 for her long and dangerous struggle.
